How turnout is effective and the impact is has to help dancers develop into the best dancer.
Turnout,
turnout is the most important aspects everyone uses in ballet. Turnout is used when performing a basic exercise at the barre, plies, jumps, etc. There’s literally no way to not use turnout, it has to be used. Throughout my ballet years, I have learned how important turnout is and I’ve so badly wanted to improve. For several months I’ve been training to increase turnout and technique as its important when starting pointe as well. Honestly, my turnout is not completely 180 degrees but its increased and its continuing to gradually get better. Today I’m sharing with you a few basic exercises that I do to help open my hips and feel the rotation of my hips.
- Floor Barre– completing at least 1 floor barre a week is super effective. Floor barre is like completing a ballet barre but on the floor. In this exercise there are plies, developes, and so on. It is much harder because it forces your muscles and joints to use turnout. Throughout it also forces you to pull your ribs in so that your back can stay straight and to feel the rotation.
- Wall Tendus– this exercise will show you how far you are for turnout. If you try to keep your ankles sliding on the floor, that will helps. Directions- Place both feet against the wall in first position, then extend on foot into tendu to the side and squeeze to come back into first position, then do the other side.
- Clam Shells- clam shells are an exercise to open up the hips and ensure your hips are aligned with your shoulders. During this exercise you will bring your knees to one side and place on leg on top of the other. Then open the knee into the air and slowly lower down. Complete this a few times and then switch to the other side.
These exercises are a few that I complete in my routines. I find these super effective. There are lots more as well. I wish you all the best and hope you turnout increases. Have a great week !
